This set-up does provide one advantage though: if at any time you wish to change hosting providers you can simply move your site somewhere else. This isn’t the case if your website builder is also your host.

Tasks generally take more clicks than other builders and the lack of an autosave feature means you have to manually save all your changes. Wix
Wix has the largest market share of any drag and drop website builder, with over 4.5 million websites being created with its software. It’s certainly a popular builder and has a lot of great features, but depending on your needs there may be better options.
Let’s start with their template selection. Wix offers over 900 templates to choose from. Some are suited for a wide range of businesses, while others are more industry-specific. There are definitely some great-looking templates here, but you’ll notice some are beginning to look a little dated. Also, keep in mind that once you select a template you’re locked in and won’t be able to change it down the road. So, make sure you’re happy with it.
After you choose your template and jump into the editor, you’ll find Wix offers a lot more customization than most other editors. Every element is editable and can be dragged and dropped anywhere you like. If you want complete control over how your page looks then Wix might be for you.
However, this level of customization can lead to issues. For example, if you’re not careful when moving text elements you may cause them to overlap an image. Most other editors would never let you do this. This unstructured environment also frequently causes issues with the mobile version of your site, and you might have to edit that version separately to get it to look the way you want.
In addition, it’s important to note that Wix offers a pretty solid ecommerce platform. Like Squarespace, it’s better suited for smaller stores. The big difference between Wix and an ecommerce builder like Shopify is the number of apps. Wix only has about 300 while Shopify has over 6,000. But if you like the Wix builder and aren’t creating a large or complicated ecommerce store then Wix should be fine.
GoDaddy
GoDaddy is one of the biggest domain registrars and web hosting companies in the world. When most people think about buying a domain they think of GoDaddy. So, it’s only natural that they eventually added a website builder to their services in order to keep all of their customers’ web services in-house.
Their website builder functions like most other popular builders on the market. You start by selecting a theme that works for your business, then you can use the builder to edit the theme to your specifications. This includes changing design features like colors and fonts, adding and removing sections, and adding additional pages.
Naturally, as part of their offerings GoDaddy provides domain names and hosting services. If you choose to purchase your domain through GoDaddy you’ll get it free for the first year. That being said, if you already have a domain through another provider you can connect it to your GoDaddy site.
While GoDaddy’s builder is fairly easy to use, the biggest drawback is its limited customization features. For example, you can’t edit the size or font of your text individually. Instead, any changes you make to your text will be implemented across your entire website. You also can’t add new elements (like additional text blocks) to your template. All you can do is simply toggle existing elements on or off.
The other big feature GoDaddy offers is ecommerce functionality. However, their ecommerce tools are extremely limited and not suited for large sellers. For example, checkouts aren’t hosted on your site (they’re hosted on mysimplestore.com) and you have to apply taxes manually, which is extremely time-consuming.
Shopify
Shopify is the clear market leader when it comes to ecommerce websites. If you’re building an online store you’ll definitely want to consider this builder, as they offer the most options and tools for ecommerce businesses.
Before we get started, it’s important to note that Shopify is strictly for ecommerce websites. If you’re just looking to build a blog or standard business website you’ll want to use one of the other builders on this list.
Shopify offers ten free themes for you to choose from. If you want a little more choice you can buy additional themes from third-party providers. Some of these themes are available through the Shopify theme store. Any themes found here are reviewed by Shopify to ensure they meet their standards. You can also find themes for sale on other marketplaces. Just know that any theme you buy somewhere else hasn’t been vetted.
Where Shopify suffers is their editor. You don’t have as many options for customizing the look of your website and the interface feels a little clunky. Some changes (such as changing your font color) even require you to edit the code of your website. So, when you select a theme make sure you’re already happy with the overall design.
It’s clear that Shopify has devoted most of its resources to developing its product editor, which makes sense as it’s geared towards ecommerce businesses. Adding and editing products is easy and very intuitive compared to other ecommerce builders.
Shopify comes with a wide range of features already installed. This includes tools for adding products, dealing with customers, handling orders, and monitoring analytics. Most of what you need is already there. For more specific use-case scenarios, there are over 6,000 apps available in the app store. No matter what type of functionality you need, chances are there is an app that will allow you to do it.
Elementor
Elementor is a drag and drop website builder plugin for WordPress. So, if you like the features of WordPress but want a drag and drop builder to edit your pages with, Elementor might be for you.
As we mentioned in our WordPress review, there are thousands of WordPress themes available. Unfortunately, not all of them work with Elementor. To make sure the theme you choose is compatible, your best bet is to use one of Elementor’s themes. There are roughly 150 free themes and 300 paid themes available.
To use the Elementor editor, follow the same steps you would when setting up your WordPress site. This includes buying a domain and hosting plan, and installing WordPress on your site. Once that’s done, simply download and install the Elementor plugin, select your plan, and you’re good to go.
Elementor works similarly to other drag and drop builders. You can edit existing elements, move them to different areas of the page, or add new elements such as text, images, and YouTube videos. It’s important to note though that the free version only lets you edit content areas. If you want to edit other areas, like headers, footers, and 404 pages, you’ll need to opt for the paid version.
There are also plenty of integrations for Elementor, including MailChimp, ConvertKit, HubSpot, and more. This makes it easier to build your funnels and develop more sophisticated marketing strategies.
Overall, if you’re set on using WordPress then Elementor will make designing your website easier. However, the builder does have a few downsides. For one, it comes with a limited number of SEO tools to help you improve your Google rankings. Customer support is also a common sticking point amongst users. Weebly

As with most website builders, you start by choosing your template. Weebly offers around 70 templates for many different industries. While the majority of their themes are well-designed and very professional, their selection lags behind other top builders.
The Weebly editor is one of the easier ones to use, especially for those with limited experience building websites. One of the best features is the way it hides other elements when you’re editing a particular section so you can easily focus on the area you’re working on. That being said, it has limited customization options, especially when it comes to editing colors. For example, if you want to change the color of your footer you’ll need to edit the code of your website.
The Square editor, while also user-friendly, is far more limited. It works by letting you add or remove pre-designed sections. You can turn different elements on or off, but you can’t add new elements to sections, which is a bit restrictive. Of course, the main point of the Square editor is to help you build an ecommerce store, and it definitely succeeds at that. Adding and editing products is super simple, and there’s also a great email editor for creating customer emails.
Weebly offers plenty of integrations that allow you to use your favorite marketing tools with your website. However, two notable integrations that aren’t available are MailChimp and Constant Contact. So, if you use these tools to send emails then connecting them to your site will be more difficult. Or you’ll have to use Weebly’s own email provider, Promote.

Web.com
Web.com is one of the oldest hosting companies and website builders around, dating all the way back to 1999. They offer a simple drag and drop builder that works well enough when it comes to making simple edits. Unfortunately, performing more complex and creative changes is more difficult.
The number of templates is also lacking. To start, you select what type of business you have and then they serve up three different templates for you to choose from. That said, Web.com comes with a large library of stock images, which is very helpful when customizing your site.
Hostgator
Primarily known for their hosting services, Hostgator recently launched a website builder to make it easier for their customers to get online. This tool offers everything you’d expect from a modern builder, including a selection of attractive templates, a user-friendly drag and drop platform, and a catalog of free stock images.
Hostgator’s builder isn’t perfect though. To start, while their plans are affordable, there’s no free trial. Editing images is also difficult and their app store is lacking compared to other builders.
Zyro
Zyro is an effective website builder that’s easy to use for both beginners and those with more experience building websites. They have a decent selection of templates (130) and ecommerce options for those looking to create an online store. Zyro’s best feature though is its AI-powered tools. Its AI Writer helps you create copy while the AI Heatmap predicts how users will interact with your site.
Unfortunately, there’s no free trial that allows you to try the software risk-free. There also aren’t a lot of options for editing photos. However, the biggest drawback is the inability to switch templates once you’ve built your site.
1&1 IONOS
Like many hosting companies, 1&1 IONOS has added a website builder to its services. It’s certainly an effective tool for creating websites, although your customization options are limited unless you opt for their Creator plan. If not, you won’t have complete control over where elements are placed on the page. They offer plenty of features though, like SEO and ecommerce tools.
1&1 IONOS provides 24/7 support to all customers, but only by phone. There are no chat or email support options, which should be a given nowadays.
Constant Contact
Constant Contact is known primarily for their email marketing services, but they recently added a website builder that integrates with their email offerings. Unlike traditional builders, that have you choose a template and then edit it, Constant Contact auto-generates a website for you based on how you answer their initial questions. Once your site is generated you can make changes using their editor.
Unfortunately, many of the designs you end up with are underwhelming and a little dated. There’s also virtually no support for SEO. One bright spot is their ecommerce platform which is surprisingly robust.
Jimdo
Jimdo is a German website builder that’s been around since 2007. When getting started with this tool you have two options: let Jimdo’s AI build a site for you based on the information you give them, or build the website yourself. Using the AI is certainly fast but gives you less creative control.
If you opt to build your site yourself you may feel more in control, but their customization options are somewhat lacking. There also aren’t many template choices, and the designs lag behind many other builders on this list. The builder works well enough but often feels clunky and slow.
Network Solutions
Network Solutions is a hosting company that’s branched out to include a website builder and web design services. Their website builder plan starts at just $2.95 for the first month. However, nowhere does it say how much subsequent months will cost. Even more troubling, their refund policy is extremely vague.
The builder works reasonably well but can be confusing at times. It’s also surprisingly tough to find their template library and a list of features you get with each plan.
Zoho
Zoho is a well-rounded website builder that’s suitable for a variety of businesses. The builder is well designed and the interface is very organized, making it easy to get the hang of the software quickly. There’s also a free library of images that you can use for your site.
Unfortunately, there are only 44 templates to choose from, and you need to upgrade to the Pro plan to access 12 of them. If you opt for their starter plan it’s important to note that you only get 500 MB of storage which could run out quickly if you’re not careful.
BigCommerce
BigCommerce is a website builder designed specifically for ecommerce businesses, making it one of the main competitors of Shopify. It’s a great option for larger online stores that are in need of more advanced options, like real-time shipping quotes, abandoned cart recovery, and product search filtering. And unlike Shopify, they don’t charge platform fees or commissions.
While this is a powerful ecommerce site builder, a common complaint is how difficult it is to set up. Also, though they don’t charge you commissions they do force you to upgrade if your revenue exceeds certain limits. This could be an issue for businesses with tighter margins.
Fasthosts
Fasthosts’ website builder offers features for bloggers, ecommerce stores, and small businesses. Perhaps the best thing about their service is their free trials. If you choose their Essential Website Builder plan you can use it free for a month, and if you choose their Complete Website Builder plan you can use it free for three months. Compared to other more affordable builders, Fasthosts offers a solid amount of customization when using the editor.

Bandzoogle
There are website builders for virtually every type of business, and now Bandzoogle has developed one specifically for musicians and bands.
